It's also my birthday! This morning Adam gave me my birthday card.
What does a girl-of-certain-age do on her birthday?
Spin, of course:
Go to the thrift store:
I found those two pillow covers and loved them. ($1 each)
The light fixture will go over our kitchen sink. I knew that if I waited long enough I'd find something at the thrift store. It's old-fashioned and just my cup of tea. Also $1!
I picked these tomatoes
this morning in my garden.
Last year on my birthday I ate my first little cherry tomato from the garden. I was quite "chuffed" (as they say in Britain) -- that means excited and happy -- to have such an early tomato. This year?I have this many tomatoes because I dug 3 volunteer plants out of the garden last fall, put them into big pots, and overwintered them (rather badly) on the front porch. But their root systems were ahead of the game when I put them back in the garden this spring. They're rewarding me with tomatoes now - a handful! They have recovered marvelously and will produce all summer. I like this plan and think I'll do it again this coming winter.
A coupe of you asked about my white skirts from the thrift store. I'm wondering if this might be a new fad. Do we need a club, ladies? I decided to show them to you with a video because it's easier:

Happy Birthday MK !!! The card Adam chose for you is so cute! I love it.
Also love your white skirts, all of which are lovely but the last one with the different patterns in the fabric is my favourite. I've never seen one here in town in any of our thrift stores. Maybe they are put with slips, if those who sort things don't know they're outer wear. Thanks for making that video.
I should try your trick of keeping a small tomato plant through the winter. Now that my porch is closed in it might not freeze in there. I wonder if it would be expensive to heat the room just a bit during the coldest months.
Keep on enjoying your day and this special week coming up.
Getting close now. Happy Birthday. We almost have the same birthday. : )
Belated Happy Birthday dear MK. I laughed over your bday card from Adam. What a hoot!
Good looking tomatoes and very happy looking about to be married sweethearts.
Have a wonderful weekend ~ FlowerLady
Enjoyed seeing your skirts. I have a long skirt of that muslin-y kind of material that has been hanging in my closet for a few years because I was shy about wearing it in public. I put it on the other day and realized I love it, and I don't care what other people think. I was thinking it was sage green, but it's more toward lime, but not a gaudy lime. It also has layers, like one you showed, and sequins the same color as the material. I loved wearing it so much (like you said, cooler and less binding than shorts or capris) I went to Walmart and bought two more long summer skirts. They are all ankle length. So glad I made the leap! The card was really cute, and you guys have fun with all the wedding excitement!
Happy Birthday, Mary Kathryn! What a treat to eat fresh ripe tomatoes from the garden on your special day! All the best as you prepare for the Wedding Day coming up.
Happy Birthday! I enjoyed this post yesterday, but was interrupted and didn't leave a comment. That is the sweetest picture of Anna and Gram. I definitely want the join your white skirt club. I have four white skirts, all from the thrift store. I simply can't resist buying a pretty white skirt. My favorite style is the tiered skirt. Your cherry tomatoes are so pretty. I too want to try overwintering one in a pot. That's amazing! That was a cute birthday card.
Happy birthday! June is my favourite month. That card is brilliant
Oh Happy Birthday!!! Your card is HILARIOUS! I really like this card. Clever Adam!
What are 'volunteer plants'? I would like to do some of that if I can!! That's lovely they have given you birthday tomatoes!
Congratulations to Anna and Gramm and how nice to have a Bridal Shower.
I really like White maxi skirts too!! There was a beautiful Brodie Anglaise one in Topshop when I was 21 that was totally in love with! But it was £55 and I was a student. Then, just before I went to Indonesia, I went into Topshop and found they had them reduced to £20 AND it was Buy one get one free in the sale, so I ended up with two of them! LOVED those skirts!
Love hearing your accent when you talk!!x
Happy birthday, four days late! I hope you had a lovely cool day. The card is hilarious!
Oh, the wedding is so close! God be with your family!
xoxoxo
I would give that overwintering a tomato, a try, on your porch. Just a tiny bit of heat, overnight, and then only on cold nights, would probably do it. I think it should stay over 40 degrees F, for it to survive. Plus, if it dies, what have you really lost? I picked another small bowl of tomatoes this morning!
I'm proud of you, Lisa! Go for it! Enjoy your life, enjoy what you want to wear, what you want to do with your leisure time, and don't waste a second doing anything that, down inside, you know you really dislike but only do out of some habit. I figure I'm 55 now, and I like being a farm wife and chicken lady and creative spirit, and that's what I'm going to exude to the world. Besides, nobody really cares much what you wear, as long as you're decent. I've found my kids are rather enjoying that their aging mother has a slightly new, quirky identity. It's rather freeing to go ahead and reinvent oneself a bit!
Thanks, Jody! I picked another handful of tomatoes this morning.
I'm still giggling over it :)
Alright, HP, we are now the first official members of the White Skirt Club! I do believe Granny Marigold is also willing, and I think Lisa Pen-and-Ink will join too. What does our club do? Nothing! We just wear white cotton skirts when we want to!
Ah, Kezzie, a "volunteer plant" is just a plant that comes up/back unexpectedly from the previous year, usually from a stray seed that fell on the ground. I get a LOT of volunteer tomatoes, and end up yanking them out of the ground like weeds. Your skirt story sounds lovely! What a good deal!
Thank you, PomPom!
Thank you, FL! Wedding Week is going along swimmingly!
It's a good time of year for birthdaying ;)
