The First Tree of Autumn

Yesterday, while biking back from the watermelon cutting, I noticed the first strong sign of autumn. I rounded a corner and saw this tree.
A firm breeze blew through its branches and leaves attached, leaves midair, leaves grounded -- all fluttered and twitched. Something in their sound said, "Autumn."

This makes me happy. My favorite season, at last! We'll have weeks yet of hot weather, I'm sure. Weeks yet of bathing suits and beaches, sweating and humidity, air conditioning and closed windows. But it's coming, oh yes, the trees are already preparing.

Today Pom Pom starts back to school. Gumbo Lily had a cloudy, rainy day (at last!!) and made donuts and stayed inside. Gretchen Joanna returned from her summer travels.  Other friends are buying school uniforms, attending teacher meetings. I leave Wednesday to take Peter to college for his freshman year. (Three kids in college simultaneously. I didn't think about that when we were having them!)

Thank you, sycamore tree! The advent of autumn is most welcome!

Ooops! I think I deleted my comment so I'll write another.
This is actually my last day. Isn't it weird that we go back on a Tuesday? We'll be sitting in LOTS of meetings. Sigh.
I can't wait to read about homeschooling in Oriental!
I'll be praying for you as you take another chick to college.
I DO love fall. I love my birthday and Halloween (even though we'll be in Canada for Halloween this year!) and I LOVE Thanksgiving! I shall gather leaves and place them in all my fat books!
Happy Monday!

The walnut tree is the last to leaf and the first to show signs of autumn; the maple is second to the walnut. I'm already seeing signs of autumn and the nights are dipping into the low, very low, 50's. Great sleeping weather!

Ah, Pom!! One more day of freedom! I hope it was splendid.
Sandra, low 50s sounds so very nice. We're definitely not that fallish yet! Enjoy :)

I'm seeing a few yellow leaves coming on the cottonwoods just now. It's a bit too early for that here, but it's been so dry that it makes sense. Tonight we are waiting to see if we're going to get hail. (ugh) Hopefully not.

Three in college at once! We have two and that's plenty!
