A Poem in your Pocket

Today is national Poem In Your Pocket Day. Carry a poem in your pocket, and share your poem with friends, family, and coworkers.

I first read about this event yesterday at Pom Pom's blog. Good ole Pom!! She's always good for a cheerful word, and a happy event!

I'm going out of town today with Anna to visit a college, so Adam will be pining a bit. This Poem-in-a-Pocket is for him then. It's one of his favorites, by Robert Frost:

The Telephone

"When I was just as far as I could walk
From here today,
There was an hour
All still
When leaning with my head against a flower
I heard you talk.
Don't say I didn't, for I heard you say --
You spoke from that flower on the window sill --
Do you remember what it was you said?"

"First tell me what it was you thought you heard."

"Having found the flower and driven a bee away,
I leaned my head,
And holding by the stalk,
I listened and I thought I caught the word --
What was it? Did you call me by my name?
Or did you say --
Someone said 'Come' -- I heard it as I bowed."

"I may have thought as much, but not aloud."

"Well, so I came."

Will he carry it in his pocket? And do you have that one in your pocket, or a different one? I'll have to go choose one of my own now! I haven't been paying attention to the phrase "Poem in Your Pocket" as I've been seeing it here and there -- until your post....thank you!

One of my very favorite Frost poem. I find the playful romance refreshing.

Hi MK!
We had a good Poem in Your Pocket Day. After lunch we read poems aloud. The kids stood up in front and read in their most poetic voices! The prize? Four gummy worms.

Well, I must admit, I didn't write it down on paper and carry it with me. Can we say I shared it from my virtual pocket? I knew my husband (he's Thymaridas, up there) would appreciate this one. He's a romantic :) Pom, your poems at school sound fun - I hope the students enjoyed it!
